SharePoint Migration and Modernisation for Uniper SE

Comprehensive cloud migration for one of Europe's largest energy companies

We supported Uniper SE in a comprehensive SharePoint migration and modernisation project. Around 110 site collections with complex, business-critical applications were migrated from SharePoint 2013 on-premise to SharePoint Online – including full reimplementation of all custom solutions using modern cloud technologies.

Starting Point

Uniper SE is one of Europe's largest energy companies, headquartered in Düsseldorf. The company operates in over 40 countries, employs around 13,000 people worldwide, and plays a central role in European energy security and the energy transition.

Uniper used Microsoft SharePoint 2013 as an on-premise installation for internal collaboration and document management. Simple sites had already been migrated to the cloud, but around 110 site collections with increased complexity remained on the legacy platform – with expiring Microsoft support, outdated technologies such as SharePoint 2013 workflows and Nintex solutions, and partially missing documentation for business-critical applications.

Our Services

Analysis and Complexity Assessment
Detailed technical analysis of each site collection, identification of features and workflows in use, complexity rating, and creation of concrete migration concepts with effort estimates.

Data Migration
The actual data migration was carried out in collaboration with a third-party provider. For particularly critical migrations, we additionally used ShareGate. After each migration, we conducted comprehensive post-checks to ensure data integrity and functionality.

Reimplementation and Modernisation
Systematic conversion of all legacy SharePoint features to cloud-native technologies: mail-enabled lists to Power Automate and Azure Logic Apps, timer services to Azure Functions, feature event receivers to SPFx extensions, SharePoint 2013 and Nintex workflows to Power Automate Flows or Azure-based solutions, custom farm solutions to modern SPFx web parts with React and TypeScript.

Future-Proofing and Governance
Deployment of the SharePoint Modernization Scanner to proactively identify future risks. Development of an automated leaver management solution with Azure Functions and HR system integration. Setup of fully automated Azure DevOps pipelines for deployment and configuration.

What Challenged Us Most

During the final migration wave involving the most complex site collections, a third-party provider caused massive data consistency issues: incorrectly assigned person fields and faulty taxonomy mappings.

We performed a forensic analysis of the migrated data, developed specialised PowerShell and C# scripts for automated data correction, and successfully repaired thousands of list items – without data loss and with minimal impact on users.

The Result

All planned site collections were successfully migrated from SharePoint 2013 on-premise to SharePoint Online. All custom solutions and workflows were fully reimplemented or modernised.

The complete migration enabled the decommissioning of the on-premise platform – with significant savings in server hardware, licences, maintenance, and security management. The cloud-based infrastructure enabled more flexible scaling and reduced long-term investment risks.

Uniper SE is now optimally positioned for future developments: automatic updates from Microsoft, better integration into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, and a modern, maintainable codebase.
